Founder of Light Directions. He studied Ergonomics at Loughborough University, England, where he specialized in lighting and vision. He has over 30 years experience in “Architectural” Lighting Design.
Soon after graduating he secured a place at Fledghing Lighting Concept Company “The Lighting Workshop” in Covent Garden London. During his time there he worked on Significant projects in London & Europe including The Ritz Hotel, The Science Museum at the Park de la Villet in Paris. Also during this period he toured Asia & Europe lighting Ice Skating Show spectaculars.
In 1988, he moved to Hong Kong and shortly afterwards began Light Directions as a vehicle for excellence in lighting design. Throughout the Asia Pacific region he has designed many landmark lighting projects. These range from luxury resorts (Four Seasons in Jimbaran Bay Bali), city hotels (Park Hyatt Beijing) to large commercial (Bank of China HK) and infrastructure developments (Ting Kau Bridge HK).
His work has been recognised by the Lighting and Building Community winning a number of international awards, notably on the Park Hyatt in Melbourne and the ambitious Cyber Express retail project in Hong Kong. His design for the exterior of I.M. Pei’s Bank of China in Hong Kong was completed to great public and professional acclaim.
Current work includes the Forum in HK & The Shangri-la on the Bosphorus Istanbul.
Principal & Director
Started his career in the UK as a humble apprentice in electrical installation & design with Matthew Hall Mechanical and Electrical Engineers Ltd., in 1985. After completing his apprenticeship, Gerard came to Hong Kong seeking adventure and a desire to connect with his Chinese heritage. He joined Light Directions in March 1990 and since then, has built up a solid portfolio of high end hospitality and commercial projects throughout the region. Past projects include the Peninsula Hotel and the award winning Hong Kong Science and Technology Park phase 2, plus numerous new and refurbishment projects with the Shangri-la Hotel Group. More recently, Gerard headed up the team that designed and completed the majority of hotel and food & beverage outlets at the Galaxy MEGA Resort and Casino on the Island of Macau.
He is a member of the Society of Light & Lighting, and has a Masters Degree in Lighting Awarded by the Queensland University of Technology.
Current projects of note include the Shangri-la Hotel at the Shard, London Bridge, London, The China World Hotel renovation in Beijing and The Court of Final Appeal in Central, Hong Kong.
A founding member of Light Directions Ltd. He is qualified in three dimensional design and has a wealth of experience in architectural lighting design, having worked in this field for over 20 years. As a result of integrating lighting into the overall design, he has a number of purpose developed luminaires in commercial production.
Solon has worked on major international luxury hotels throughout the Asia Pacific region including the extraordinary refurbishment at the original Hilton Hotel in H.K., refurbishment of The Shangri-La Hotels in Kowloon and Hong Kong. He detailed the lighting for the Ting Kau Bridge in H.K. and Regional Police Headquarters in Tsuen Wan.
He is currently working on – Crowne Plaza Hotel & Holiday Inn Express HK and Lee Theatre Plaza Renovation Causeway Bay.
Qualified in three dimensional design. He is fluent in Mandarin and has over 20 years experience in lighting. Skilled in handling Mainland China projects. He has detailed the successful Park Hyatt project in Melbourne, completed the lighting for the refurbishment of the Raffles Hotel Beijing and he was the principal designer for the extraordinary Intercontinental in Hangzhou and essential to the success of the Park Hyatt in Beijing.
His current projects include The Mandarin in Shanghai & The New World Guiyang Hotel.
Senior Project Designer
Trained in Building Studies before specializing in lighting design. Thoroughly experienced in project production and implementation. Jason has been with L.D.L. for nearly 16 years. Major project experience includes Ponte 16, Macau, Four Points Sheraton, Shenzhen and Holiday Inn Hong Kong.
His recent project involvement include Stanley Plaza HK, Jinzhou International Hotel, Liaoning and Sheraton Bailuhu Resort, Huizhou.
Senior Project Designer
In charge of L.D.’s rendering & presentation. He has thorough experience across the range of projects Light Directions undertakes. Eric has been with L.D.L. more than 15 years. In that time he has guided many projects to successful completion. Recently his major projects includes Swissotel Riverside Towers, Moscow & Westin Financial Street Hotel, Beijing. His most recent work includes Shimei Bay, Hainan, The Excelsior Hong Kong and Tott’s Restaurant and Former Marine Police Headquarters in TST HK. Now working on The Four Seasons in Guangzhou & The Shangri-la at the Shard, London.
Senior Lighting Designer
Coming from a commercial lighting background, he has graduated with a Masters in Lighting Design. He is an extremely valuable member of our team bringing an understanding of the larger lighting “Industry” with him and to his project management. In his relatively brief period with L.D.L. he has eased the design for the lighting of the Galaxy Mega Resorts in Macau into realization. Worked on the successful lighting refurbishment of Chater house in HK and is now sorting out the Complex technical issue for Wing On Building in Central HK and the design for the New World Hotel in Shenyang China.
