The Opus Dubai

Dubai

The Opus was designed to be different and to challenge the norm. Equally so, the Lighting design had to accentuate this strategy.

In this project, the lighting design focused on highlighting the elegant and timeless form of the building. Creating a harmony between architecture, interior design, and lighting design to ensure a beautiful illumination of all spaces throughout the day.

The project scope was Interior FOH, Hotel Rooms, Serviced Apartments & Exterior landscape. The entire interior was kept monochromatic, with light "splashes" of colour in key areas to accentuate different moods and to create some drama.

As the interior was very prominent, the lighting had to accentuate this design without fighting it. It was essential that our design created a clear connection throughout all the spaces whilst keeping the lighting levels sufficient.

The architecture of the building was very complex, the organic shapes made the planning of the lighting arrangements and required levels a challenge. A lot of attention to detail was required to accentuate and support the architecture.

An architectural marvel, The Opus is home to the new Melia Hotel in Dubai.

Project Gallery

Some very unique lighting arrangements had to be created to keep the ceilings visually aligned withing each shape.

Utilizing a fully automated DALI lighting control system for the public areas allowed our team to set different scenes based on the time of day. This was especially challenging in the Atrium where lots of natural light entered the space during day, whereas contrastingly at night the “void” is lit by a pixel façade installation.

It was essential for this project to carefully balance each scene to allow the guest to experience the entire space without the light “interfering” with the other elements but still draw attention to the architecture.

The building, and the luxury lighting design, has quickly become a magnet for visitors, who regularly take pictures of the iconic lobby, textured by the flowing lines of light that brings the environment to life.

The overall design of the building allows for a lot of natural light to enter all areas during day. Our team ensured to set the lighting scenes to respond to the different times of day allowing for power saving when the lighting was not required.

The atrium was particularly important as some sections were covered whilst others were hit by direct sunlight. We designed each 5m segment of cove light on a different circuit, allowing us to “blend” the sweeping coves from light to dark spaces.

The fixtures supplied for this project came from local suppliers that source sustainable products from manufactures within the local region.
